To make this interesting, let's imagine a human-free environment, location unknown. The forested areas are dominated by the tiger. The grasslands and bush country are dominated by lions. However, connecting these two environments are huge areas of open forest where the trees are spaced enough to be inviting to animals of the open savanna while also comfortable for forest creatures. Here, lion meets tiger. Who will become the true apex predator?

In my opinion, in general, these two cats would learn to coexist, by mutual avoidance. One may still be dominant over the other, and i believe this would be the lion, due to their group oriented behavior. In a situation where lion meets tiger, i would still give it to the lion. It is similar sized, more aggressive, can last longer in a fight, with a protective mane.

Obviously, Mother Nature seldom arranges a fair fight. A lion is seldom a loner. A pride of lions will most often have two or three mature males defending their territory. In time, tigers will learn to avoid such terrain altogether.

But lions are noisy animals. Sometimes the lion brothers will be apart/alone, and the tiger can sneak in and launch an attack anytime once he finds out one of the males is by himself. But their may be mutual avoidance between them, but they`ll keep out of the way simply because they prefer varying/different habitats.
